James Reyes (b. 1991, Bronx, NY) is a Puerto Rican–heritage painter exploring the intersection of figuration and abstraction. After earning his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2014, he participated in NYC’s guerrilla exhibition scene with Apostrophe NYC and the Base 12 collective, showing at the Whitney, MoMA PS1, and Luna Park.

Reyes has had solo exhibitions at Apostrophe NYC/Mana Contemporary (2017) and Ki Smith Gallery (2022, 2023), and was featured at the 2025 SCOPE Art Fair in Miami. Working across scales, his gestural paintings use chaotic brushstrokes, splashes, and drips to evoke figures that are simultaneously rendered and surreal. His work is held in private collections, Mana Contemporary, and a museum opening in Baltimore in 2026.
